For Those Who Prefer to Do It Yourself
Starting in March 2020, we had some time on our hands (no idea why). If you prefer to DIY, this is for you.
Agile for Enterprise-scale COTS & SaaS Implementations
While agility is something many organizations strive for, “Agile” can be something else entirely.
Indeed, of its many evangelists, few seem to grasp the concepts and pragmatic implications of what they preach. Specifically, this is apparent when they attempt to apply basic Agile tenets to large-scale COTS or SaaS (i.e., package) implementations. In truth, many fail to recognize that application implementation is not the same as application development. To be sure, working with off-the-shelf products requires many adjustments, as compared to writing software from scratch.
Comparatively, to apply iterative delivery concepts effectively to enterprise-level initiatives, one must understand where and how those principles should apply – as well as where they should not. Of course, there is no one right “Agile way”. Indeed, it is intended to be flexible; tailored to suit specific needs. However, the frequency with which it is misapplied, misunderstood, or simply botched, raises many concerns. And rightly so.
Transformation, Digital and Otherwise
Without a doubt, it is possible to apply an iterative approach to COTS and SaaS initiatives. In fact, it is desirable. However, do not try to reinvent the wheel(s). After all, many people have given a lot of thought to this topic. As a result, you may now leverage their experience by following the links below.
To capitalize on iterative delivery's strengths, and mitigate its weaknesses, it is important to define terminology, align consistent processes, and establish shared understanding amongst all stakeholders. To that end, we are building a rather large repository of knowledge capital.
